Kanzi: A Monkey Who Could Speak English

The most intelligent monkey died just last week, leaving behind a legacy that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about animal intelligence. Kanzi, a bonobo, was no ordinary primate. He lived to the ripe age of 44 in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Ape Cognition Project, a facility dedicated to studying and preserving bonobos.

Kanzi was a language whiz, understanding around 3,000 spoken words and communicating with symbols. But what’s truly remarkable is that he also learned to make stone tools, just like our ancient ancestors. He even developed his own techniques, which impressed archaeologists who taught him the skill.

But here’s the part that might surprise you the most: Kanzi was a gamer! He loved playing Pac-Man and, believe it or not, Minecraft. Yes, you read that right—Minecraft! He enjoyed building blocks and having an audience cheer him on as he showed off his skills.

Kanzi’s life was a testament to the incredible capabilities of animal intelligence. He will be remembered for his remarkable abilities and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. Rest in peace, Kanzi. You were truly one of a kind!

NB! I know this post comes on 1 April, but I guarantee you, this is not a fake story.
